Other Personal Cards
In addition to the cards above, which may want to get for various reasons, U.S. Bank offers a few additional credit cards.
- U.S. Bank Platinum card No rewards or benefits, but it provides free cell phone protection (if you use it to pay your cell phone bill). There are better options for getting cell phone coverage. No signup bonus, no annual fee. Official Webpage
- Harley-Davidson card 3% off purchases from Harley dealers, redeemable for Harley gift cards. No annual fee. Official Webpage
- Kroger Cards. U.S. Bank offers a collection of cards branded for each of the major grocery store chains in the Kroger Family. They all earn 1% at Kroger and .5% elsewhere. They market it as 2x/1x, but each point is only worth .5 cents towards groceries. During the first year, you do get an additional 55 cents per gallon off gas when you redeem 100 fuel points.
- Quicken World Mastercard. 2% on a variety of different categories, 1% everywhere else. Unless you really want the slightly tighter integration with the Quicken mobile app, this doesn't compare favorably to even a no-annual-fee 2% cashback card. Official Webpage.
- REI card 5% back on REI purchases and a $100 gift card upon first purchase. Official Webpage
U.S. Bank Rules and Tips
- Each type of U.S. Bank Credit Card has its own type of points. FlexPerks, Altitude Reserve points, and Altitude Go points all have different redemption options and can't be combined. Altitude Reserve and FlexPerk points can be worth up to 1.5 cents when used for travel purchases.
- There are no limits to earning signup bonuses multiple times. If you get approved, you'll earn the signup bonus.
- But it can be difficult to get approved for cards. They are sensitive to the number of recent inquiries. Odds are better if you are one of their banking customers.
- U.S. Bank typically offers referral bonuses. There is no single place to check, try to doing a web search with the name of the card and the word "referral".
- You can downgrade your cards within the same family. For example, you can convert one Altitude card into another, but you can't convert one of their airline cards into an Altitude card.
- Advanced details. Before applying for their credit cards, Doctor of Credit suggests you freeze your SageStream and ARS credit reports. U.S. Bank reports your credit utilization on the 1st of the month, not on your statement date.
If you need to talk to a representative, you can take advantage of myFico.com's list of backdoor phone numbers. These, often unpublished, phone numbers will get you directly to more experienced credit card company employees that may be better able to provide assistance.
