Bank of America Rules and Tips
- You can only be approved for four personal cards every two years, and only three of those cards in any 12 month period, and two cards in any two month period. This controls the total number of Bank of America cards, so choose wisely. But, it doesn't affect business cards. Unlike the Chase 5/24 rule, this only accounts for the cards you get from Bank of America, not from other banks.
- There are additional limitations for certain cards. You aren't eligible to get the Premium Rewards card or the personal version of the Alaska Airlines card, if you've had the card in the previous 24 months. You aren't eligible to get the Travel Rewards or Cash Rewards card, if you've already have the card, unless you've had it for at least 24 months (there is no need to cancel the earlier the card first). For all their other cards, there are no additional restrictions, and you can even have multiple copies of the same card.
- If you are initially declined, there is a good chance that you can still get the card if you call their reconsideration line. You just may need to make a few changes to your accounts.
- You can usually get your annual fee waived, if you call right after it posts. You may even be able to get an additional retention offer sometime over the course of the year as well. It is also possible to downgrade your card.
- Bank of America doesn't usually offer referral bonuses.
- Advanced details. They will typically match a higher signup bonus that becomes available after you sign up for the card. If you ask, they will sometimes send the cards with priority shipping. Typically, if you are declined for a credit card, they will only make a soft inquiry.
- (Advanced) Lower your credit limit on your Bank of America cards before you cancel them. According to Doctor of Credit, there is a glitch in Bank of America's system where a cancelled credit card will still count against your overall credit limit for another year. If you lower your credit limit before you cancel, you will have more credit capacity at BOA to get a new card.
