Using the Card for Your Spending

If you can get this card, and you are willing to put up with its limitations, it earns the highest cash-back rewards of any card. Realistically, most people are going to be better off with the Alliant Cashback Card or PayPal Cashback Credit Card, or with a card that earns transferable credit card points.

• Most people can't get this card. It is only available to people who live in California, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, and Hawaii. You can’t apply online, the approval process takes time, and you are likely to be asked to provide additional documentation like pay stubs and tax forms. If you do get the card, credit limits are likely to be low.
• You'll earn approximately 3% cash back on any purchase. The base reward rate on the card is 3%. However, you only earn 1% on your first $1,000 in purchases, and 2% on your next $2,000 in purchases. Counteracting this small loss of rewards, is the possibility of an annual bonus. You'll get a $15 bonus, if you spend at least $1,000 per year, or a $50 bonus, if you spend at least $5,000 per year. If you spend more than $5,000 per year, the lost reward on your purchases and the annual bonus, work out to a straight 3% cash back,, plus an extra $10 in rewards.
• The card can't be used at every merchant. It is part of the Japanese-based JCB network, rather than a Visa, Mastercard, or American Express card. You are supposed to be able to use it at any place that takes the Discover card, but in practice this doesn’t always work, especially online. That means you can only use it for some of your purchases. You'll need need another card that you can use as well.
